The Story Behind the Square...

"This quote represents the famous story of Joe Anderson. The school has honored him by including his namesake in the title Rosenwald Anderson School. They chose this name because of Joe Anderson, a slave and expert brick builder, who built the foundation for the Mars Hill College. When his slave owner couldn't pay the debt from the cost of building the school, the debt collectors took Joe Anderson as collateral and threw him in jail.
The community rallied together to come up with the money to free him from jail. However, I wanted to represent the fact that, though free from jail and reunited with his family, Mr. Anderson was still a slave, still in shackles. The white birds flying around his head represent how only white people were truly free, uxtaposing his supposed freedom."
