The Story Behind the Square...

Located in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains, the Mars Hill Anderson Rosenwald School educated many young black students from 1930 until integration of the school system in 1964. The school building then fell into a state of disuse and decay not fit for historic landmarks such as this one. The school has been recently restored to its former glory with the help of the Friends Committee, preservation grants, and other community members. This quilt square is meant to show the beauty of the school, which was recently regained, and the beauty of the is eternal.

These quilt squares were made during the Partnership for Appalachian Girls Education Summer Program in 2021, which had the honor of being the first educational program to take place in the school since the 1960s.
