"One of the alumni of the Marcel Anderson Rosenwald School, William Ray, told us that we came in and didn't worry about being cold. When he said that, it really interested me to learn that these small students would come in and help to warm up the school by heating up the stove. This showed us how they cared about other people and how they helped to nurture their classmates. My square is arranged with the students sitting around the stove which has a fire going and a bean pot on top. It is heating up the room and the students. The stove gave them heat and warmth and food. So they came to the to school and they ate and then they were warm. Their bellies were full and they got settled down. Then they could focus better on the teachings. The chalkboard on my square is a symbol of the teacher teaching.

The stove is an important part of the history  at Marcel Anderson Rosenwald School. It shows how the African Americans worked hard to supply their own heat to feed their children, to nurture each other, and to help their children focus and learn better."
