"If you want to be free, education is the key". 

I heard the alumni Fatimah' Shabazz say that, and I connected it to segregation when only African Americans were allowed at the MHARS school. My piece was inspired by a photo I saw from Miss Sarah Rowan's picture collection. The picture was of two rows and a teacher up front teaching.

 

One of the teachers that made the most impact on the students was Miss Wilson.  Miss Wilson was a teacher and principle for 14 years. She knew that her African American students were just as capable of learning as the whites. Through two generations Miss Wilson and her daughter Fatimah' Shabazz wanted to make education fair and equal for everyone."
